TomTheTrader .: (20:49) Every other time that we’ve seen this high-risk volume drop off, the Nasdaq Composite enjoyed a positive return over the next six months.
TomTheTrader .: (20:51) In April, we saw that the traders who gravitate to the Over-The-Counter (OTC) market had picked up their interest in those speculative stocks.
TomTheTrader .: (20:51) In relation to volume on the more-established Nasdaq exchange, OTC turnover neared a decade-long high.
TomTheTrader .: (20:51) The correction in May and June fixed that to a large degree. These traders tend to scurry from high-risk penny stocks when the broader market runs into trouble, and this time was no exception.
TomTheTrader .: (20:51) What is notable about the activity in June is just how slow the trading got. The total number of transactions dipped below 360,000 for only the 8th month since 1998, when that level started to serve as something of a minimum.
TomTheTrader .: (20:52) Looking at the Nasdaq Composite’s six-month future performance, its returns were excellent. It managed to stage a 100% win rate in that time frame, with a median return of +25.5%, an exceptional surplus to a random six-month return during the study period.
TomTheTrader .: (20:52) Overall, we’d still rate this is a positive for stocks.
TomTheTrader .: (20:52) On 11 of the last 13 Nonfarm Payroll days, the S&P 500 lost ground, declining an average of -0.7%. So the recent trend hasn’t been pretty. Long-term, when the market has been doing well (above both the 50- and 200-day moving average), it has gained on Nonfarm Payroll day 71% of the time. Like most things, there’s a positive and negative spin, with nobody really having a good clue about the strength of the report and what traders’ reactions will be.
