TomTheTrader .: (20:57) The market didn’t just break out to a new high, it steamrolled to one.
TomTheTrader .: (20:57) The benchmark S&P 500 index scored a new one-year high, with the largest gain and on the highest volume in more than a month.
TomTheTrader .: (20:57) This is only the fourth time in a decade it’s managed that kind of a breakout. The other three tacked on decent gains over the next few months
TomTheTrader .: (20:58) The only real link we could find was between the very short-term and the very long-term. If the S&P gained ground during the week after the breakout, then one year later it gained even more 21 out of 26 times (an 81% win rate), averaging +10.0%. Its maximum gain during the year (+13.0%) averaged three times greater than its maximum loss (-3.9%).
TomTheTrader .: (20:58) But if the S&P fell during the week after the breakout, then a year later it was positive 8 out of 13 times (a 62% win rate) averaging only +5.6%. It’s maximum gain of +9.9% averaged not much more than its maximum decline of -6.0%.
TomTheTrader .: (20:58) So it’s a bit of a stretch, but some upside follow-through in the coming days should be a good longer-term sign.
