TomTheTrader .: (09:01) Active investment managers are showing more signs of group-think. The managers are carrying a median exposure to equities of 95% net long, the highest in more than 18 months and close to the highest levels in six years.
TomTheTrader .: (09:01) hedgers continued to add to their net short position in the equity index futures, now totaling an estimated $33 billion, the largest amount since January 2007.
TomTheTrader .: (09:02) we looked at what’s happened when the DJIA reaches an entire quarter (63 trading days) without a 1% decline, while recently trading at a 52-week high.
TomTheTrader .: (09:02) Since 1900, there were 16 such cases. Over the next six months, the Dow was positive all 16 times, with a median return of +6.0%.
TomTheTrader .: (09:02) STRENGTH BEGETS STRENGTH
TomTheTrader .: (09:03) The maximum decline during those periods averaged -3.5% versus a maximum gain that averaged +8.0%.
TomTheTrader .: (09:03) The DJIA is within a whisper of a 52-week high, but the Dow Jones Transports are more than 8% below its own 52-week high.
TomTheTrader .: (09:03) That hasn’t meant much – going back to 1930, the DJIA showed a higher average return during the next 3 and 6 months following divergences like this than it did when the Transports were also within 0.5% of its own 52-week high.
